Do I Need To Use A Make Up Primer????

Applying a makeup primer is crucial for certain skin types, while unnecessary for others. Primers are often misunderstood and the tendency is it is being confused to moisturizers. The big questions are: Should you use one and are they truly necessary? What do they actually DO?

There are various types of primers, such as liquid, gel or loose powder. Basically a primer PREPARES your skin for your makeup. OILY SKIN: If you have oily skin, use of PRIMER is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The only exception might be if your loose powder foundation contains a large amount of clay (usually in the form of kaolin clay). Then you might not need a primer.

The final effect and result of a good primer is to give your skin a a feel satiny smooth finish before applying the rest of your makeup.
If you do not apply a primer your face might be fine throughout the day. However, it is likely that your foundation will shift. It might collect in certain areas, like around your nose. It might disappear from around your mouth or eyes, thus making you look anything but pretty. So use a primer to avoid this!

COMBO SKIN: Follow the same directions for those with oily skin.

NORMAL SKIN: You don't have to use a primer at all. It is recommended however to use one if you are using a very oily or thick liquid makeup. If using a loose powder mineral makeup, then a primer isn't necessary as you have no problems to correct.

DRY SKIN: Use a primer. You will have a tendency to apply more moisturizer than other skin types (and you should), but this could lead to makeup slipping. Makeup slipping is the process of makeup sliding around on your face throughout the day.
Apply a primer for dry skin. These will often have gentle ingredients that are designed to hold moisture, while keeping your makeup intact.

Do NOT use any product with clay or cornstarch in it, or other oil-absorbing ingredients, as these will dry your skin out more.

How To Apply Mineral Make Up

HOW TO APPLY MINERAL MAKE UP - LESSON 101:

There are various ways of applying mineral make. It varies according to brand, skin type, environment (whether you're from a cold or topical place), etc. Sundry Online Shop wishes to provide a generic way of applying mineral make up. The result given all other factors shall be basically up to your own style of improvement. Here's just a basic way of applying mineral make up:

1. Prepare your materials.

Gather all your materials first. Blush, multiuser mineral powder, mineral veil, brushes, prep materials, etc. Decide on what effect that you wish to have for the day and prepare all the colors (eyeshadows, blush, lip tint) that will support the effect you want to have.

2. Clean, Tone and Moisturize.

Basic rule when applying any other make up, it is important to clean the face first then tone it. Apply your favorite moisturizer. For people with oily skin, water-based moisturizer is highly recommended.

3. Tap your foundation on the lid or if you have a mineral bowl swirler.

Be sure to tap a small amount. Most newbies think that mineral make up follows the same amount as that of chemically-based make up. A big NO, NO!!!! Mineral make up, due to it's very fine texture only requires a small amount to cover the entire face. Too much can make it chalky or you might look like an apparition to everyone (not good to scare people right?)

4. Begin with your mineral concealer.

Using your concealer brush to hide away your imperfections. Most mineral make up foundations are two-in-one, it can serve as a foundation and as well as a concealer however concealers are also available to those who prefers to have a separate one. Mineral concealers come in various color for the different skin challenges (a separate discussion will be posted for this subject).

5. Apply your mineral foundation.

Two ways to apply, wet and dry. Wet for heavier coverage preferred by those with oily skin, dry for lighter coverage without much blemishes to cover. To apply the foundation wet, you can choose to either get your regular facial sprits or simply mix the foundation with water (be sure that the water is clean though). Most prefers using a kabuki brush to apply mineral foundation however any foundation brush will do. Sponge can also be used especially for wet application.

To get heavier coverage especially for those with oily skin, after the wet foundation application, let it dry for a few seconds then proceed with the dry foundation application using a flat top kabuki or any flat top make up brushes. This approach is also best for sponge applied foundation.

6. Prepare your blush, warming color and/or bronzer.

Some individuals prefers adding a little warming color on top of their foundation to make it more natural. Before doing so, gather all the colors you wish to use and tap them on the lid or the mineral bowl swirler. Again, you will only need a little amount to avoid the exagerrated look.

To apply your blush, swirl and tap any excess powder on the lid. You can use any multipurpose brush. Trick in applying a simple blush that won't let you look like a raggidy doll or somebody that just got a slap, smile while applying the blush following the area where your cheeks raises upward.

If you plan to use a mineral veil or setting powder, it's ok to make your blush color a little heavier so you can blend it during your final touch.

Warming colors or bronzers can be applied by any multipurpose brush. No need to cover the entire face unless you really prefer to do so. Simply swirl the brush and tap the excess powder and glide it across your cheeks and temples, very lightly down the nose and chin then slightly to the jaw line and a light tap on the blushes to just blend the colors for a more natural look.

7. Eyeshadows, Multipurpose Mineral Powder

For the eyes, you can choose any colors that you wish to use. Most brands offer multipurpose mineral powder for eyeshadows since you can still use it as a mineral veil, bronzer, nail colors, etc. Some brands have their specific eyeshadow mineral powder. Personally, i prefer the multipurpose for practicality reasons. Colors can be adjusted anytime so i don't see buying eyeshadows as practical. Multipurpose powders comes in frost, shimmer and matte finish by the way.

Ideally, 3 colors of eyeshadows are acceptable however you can always play and come up with the different styles by combining the different colors that you have. (Separate topic will be published for eyeshadow color blending). Conservative look demands matte eyeshadows with a hint of frost or shimmer. Party look may require frost and shimmer eye shadows. It is always best to play around the colors everyday to check what will suit your face best.

Eyeshadows are best applied wet and heavy to last a whole day. Some uses the facial mist, others just use clean water but i use petroleum jelly with it. First, it comes off easier at the end of the day, makes my eyelid softer and lastly, it holds the color more than 12hours! You can use any eyeshadow brush or eyeshadow tip to apply.

8. Mineral Veil, Mineral Setting Powder

There are different names being used by many brands for the final touch. Some calls it mineral veil, most call it setting powder. Choose what suit your needs best. Swirl and tap excess powder and simply buff your setting powder and veil all over your face. This will blend all the colors you applied, the blush, the eyeshadow, bronzer, etc. You can use your favorite kabuki brush or any other multipurpose brush to do this. Remember, with mineral make up, one important action is to buff your heart away! Don't overbuff though otherwise you'll look so shiny just like a car that just had it's wax dose!

9. And finally, apply any lip tint or lipstick that will go well with your color-of-the-day and you are all set!!!!

Applying mineral make up requires a lot of practice so we suggest that even if you plan to simply stroll and go malling, try and practice applying it. As they say, practice makes perfect. It's also good to try out the different eyeshadow look that you wish to have.

Appying Mineral Make Up - Style 1

How To Apply Mineral Make-Up

Tips to Acheive the Perfect Look with Mineral-Based Cosmetics

Write up courtesy of © Catherine Solmes - http://www.suite101.com/

Mineral make-up is a beauty trend worth investing in, but applying it requires extra time and attention. Here are some tips and tricks to achieve the perfect look!

Mineral make-up is here to stay! Whether you've been using it for a while or are thinking of buying it for the first time, it's important to know how to apply it. Applying it can seem daunting at first and may require some practice to perfect. The right tools and techniques are key to achieving a flawless complexion.

Most mineral make-up brands will offer step-by-step or video instructions when you buy their products. If you buy mineral make-up from a store or make-up counter, make sure to ask for instructions on how to apply it. Take the time to read or watch the instructions and learn the techniques. It'll make all the difference!

The Brushes

Depending on whether you're using your mineral make-up as concealer or foundation, you will need to use a different brush to apply it.

To apply mineral make-up as a foundation, you will get the best results with what is commonly referred to as a Kabuki brush. These are similar to a powder or blush brush, but with a short, stubby handle and firm, full bristles. Mineral make-up is applied with a buffing motion, so the short, stubby handle is easier to hold and maneouver while the short, full bristles allow for even coverage.

To apply mineral make-up as a concealer, you can use your fingers (for undereye circles or areas needing more coverage) or a concealer brush (firm, narrow bristles with a rounded tip) for the undereye area or lip brush (short bristles that come to a tip) for blemishes and around your nostrils.

Mineral make-up brands will often sell brushes along with the make-up, but quality can vary. You may have to try different Kabuki-style brushes to find the one you like best.

Brands like Neutrogena and L'Oréal sell their products with built-in brushes for portability and easier application.

The Motion

Due to the loose powder texture of mineral make-up, it may be tempting to just dab it on like you would with loose powder, but don't! Mineral make-up is much less transluscent than loose powder and is meant to be worn as foundation, so you need to apply it sparingly and build it in stages to acheive the ideal look.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Spill a small amount of product onto a tissue. You don't need much and can always add more later.
  2. Take your Kabuki brush and dab it into the powder. Rotate the bristles down into the powder, working the product up into the brush. You want to get the powder into the bristles rather than sitting on the tips. When there's no powder visible on the tips of the bristles, you're ready to apply it.
  3. Starting at the centre of your face (your forehead is a good place to start) buff the brush against your skin in a circular motion, working towards the edges of your face.
  4. Continue to buff until you need to add more product. You should only need to add more once or twice during the application. Less is more!
  5. The buffing motion is key to the flawless application. It works the minerals into your skin so they adhere and blends it out so that its the same consistency everywhere on your face.
  6. To use the mineral make-up powder as concealer, simple dip your concealer brush or finger into the powder and apply it to the area you wish to conceal. If it's your undereye, be very gentle when applying it. You can use the Kabuki brush afterwards to smooth out any excess in the area.
